“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
|Here at the LBA, we have sensational volunteer and internship program that has seen over 70 individuals gain an invaluable experience every year. 50% of them received references for good work and the majority of them moving onto paid jobs! London Basketball Association has developed and advanced this program over the years, making it an impeccable part of its success. We don’t only focus on basketball, we have an immense range of roles and opportunities such as Human Resources, IT Officer, Project Management, Marketing, Social Media and Accountancy. We provide exclusive and on charted opportunities throughout the year for everyone from different social class backgrounds.
Over the past 4 years, we have been quite popular, as we have had in total over 280 volunteers from different backgrounds and different ages from 11 – 50-year olds. However, the most popular ages are between 15 – 24-year olds. Their roles have been from helping in the field to volunteering in our Head Office, for instance, I myself. I am a volunteer in LBA as a PR Assistant and I can honestly say, that I would never have thought I could gain so much experience and knowledge by working closely with the team at the Head Office. The colleagues here are nice and always willing to help one another, they have made me feel valued and being part of their team. Lastly and most importantly, for me, till this day they are helping me to be more confident in myself and in the line of work that I am doing. It is an everyday learning process and I am so very grateful for it.
Here in LBA, we believe that it is important to bring positive social change into deprived communities and into people’s lives, especially for the young Londoners of today. For us, it is essential that we unite people from different ethnic and social backgrounds and get people employed by firstly, introducing basketball into their lives and also, by giving them the opportunity to work with us in our Head Office or out in the field. If you are interested in becoming a referee, coach or a table official, we offer the GET Qualified courses, this will lead you to become a fully qualified ROC.
Earlier this year, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has launched the social integration strategy, and we support it 100%, as we ourselves tackle inequality by using the power of basketball and the power of volunteering. Our aim is to encourage respect and to engage with everyone, especially to those that seem undervalued with themselves. In a way, our volunteer programs confronts social integration as volunteers are constantly working and communicating with the team. This tactic gets you out of your comfort and shy zone! And without a doubt you will gain essential experience and become more confident in yourself.
|Over the past few years, we have had many interns from different organisations and most of them were international students. They are always interested in getting involved in our volunteering programs and internships. Lately, our volunteering program has become successful as other organisations are constantly contacting us on wanting to know about our secret on how we are thriving on our volunteer program.
At the LBA’s head office, we are proud to say that we are surrounded by multicultural individuals. We do not believe that you should be a certain race or with a certain social class to be working with us, quite the contrary. We passionately believe that everyone should be respectful, getting to know one another as it is the only way to create and become a great team and finally, at the end of the day, we are all equally the same, the only difference is our ethnic backgrounds which in the end, that is what makes us unique.
LBA Head of Human Resources – Mukta Munshi.
“It is a win-win situation for both of us. They are being mentored by us and they learn on the job. Their energies are channeled in a productive way and we get our results as desired. Our love for the game is the binding factor here.”
