LBA’s Push for Women’s Empowerment in Basketball

In 2024, according to the Sport England report, women make up 25% of basketball players, yet only 16.7% of referees and an even smaller percentage of coaches are female. This disparity highlights the need for more women in these crucial roles, and the LBA is stepping up to bridge this gap. Empowering women in basketball means breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for leadership and influence within the sport. It’s about recognising and nurturing the potential that women bring to the game, not just as players but as key decision-makers and role models.

Through our partnerships with the Black Prince Trust, Michael Jordan, and many more we’ve organised free courses, designed to train and certify women as referees and coaches. These courses offer a pathway for women to start earning immediately, providing not just qualifications but also job opportunities. This initiative is more than just training; it’s a movement towards gender equality in sports, fostering a supportive community where women can thrive and lead.
