Become a Basketball Referee & Coach | 2024 Spring programme


Do you want to become a ROC for FREE? Yes!
That’s what I thought! Well, you can. Come out and join LBA and Black Prince Trust as we are putting on a Referee and Coaching course between April and May 2024.

The LBA has designed a program to help you become a Referee Officials Course (ROC) graduate and start earning income within 1-3 months. This exciting initiative is made possible with the funding and support from some awesome organizations, like,  Michael Jordan Brand Prince Trust, to name a couple.

Getting this certification can help you get onto the court and make money quickly and easily and pays £20 an hour on average via AllOfficials.

How to become a ROC

  1. Complete the expression of interest form
  2. You will be contacted to be given an exclusive link to sign up.
  3. Once you are selected, you will receive a special link to officially sign up through Eventbrite. It is on a first come first serve basis and there are limited spaces.

How it works


Candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Level 1 Basketball Referee – You mus be 14+
  • Level 2 Basketball Coach – You must be 18+
Courses Schedule
Level 1 Basketball Referee Online segmentAnytime between April & May
Level 1 Basketball Referee – Practical segmentAttend a minimum of 3 scrimmages throughout April and May These sessions are on  Fridays 18:00-20:00
Level 2 Basketball Coach – Online segmentAnytime in April
Level 2 Basketball Coaching – Practical segmentMay 4th & 31st. There may be some alternative dates, please ask if needed.

Practical segments will be at Regal* – Black Prince Trust and St Augustine’s Sport Centre. You must be able to commit to the practicals

The online segment. If accepted, you can do this anywhere as long as you have a device like a phone or laptop and you’ll need the internet.

Mandatory Volunteering

We’re all about giving you opportunities to make use of your certifications. This said, we have found that the best way is for candidates to volunteer, as this takes the pressure off and guides you to become competent and confident!


  • For coaching, there are 10* hours to be completed outside of the course
  • For refereeing, there are 2 sessions/events to complete.
Basketball Coach

Level 2 is intermediate and will allow you to be the “head coach”.


You’ll need to complete the online segment, which can be done anywhere as long as you have a device and internet.


Then there is a practical segment, which are a minimum of 10 hours and there are set options for this:

  • 2 day of 5-hour day
    • Day one at Black Prince Trust on the 4th of May, 09:00–14:00
    • Day two is at St. Augustines Sports Centre in Kilburn, on May 31st, 12:30–17:30.

Basketball Referee

During the season, there are over 200 games a week for Referees and Table Officials to get jobs during the season once they are certified at Level 1. There is a huge demand for basketball officials, however, there is a shortage. So join the the basketball workforce today and start securing jobs that suit your schedule.

How to get paid

Finally, we recommend that you create a profile on the AllOfficials website. Once your profile has been approved, you gain access to an officials job board and can apply to all relevant job opportunities posted there.
